![]() He is very clean cut and respectful of authority and those above him in society and maintains this affect even when there are very clear reasons as to why he shouldn’t.Īs the plot progresses and the narrator grows we see him start to abandon his old ways. In these early scenes, before the narrator comes face to face with the brotherhood we also see him as a very naïve young person who thinks the best of everyone with little to no ill thoughts. He is looking out for himself and his future, a primal instinct of every human. Not wanting to be brutally beaten or embarrassed in front of everyone he wants the other man to take a fall and in return he can have all the prize money. As the fight continues he repeatedly tries to offer his competitor deals to end the fight without any real injuries here we were able to see his sly mind at work. At this point the blindfolds were removed and he had to battle this person without any tricks. As the others stumbled blindly around him he swiftly sidestepped out of harm’s way until it was only him and one other man left. This scene shows that the character will do what it takes to come out on top and to save himself if needed. Midway through the brawl he realizes that he can lift up his blindfold a little bit so that he can see and protect himself. He does not really want to fight but he doesn’t want to miss this speech opportunity more so he fights. He is invited to a gathering to give a speech, which he loves to do, and almost against his will he is thrust into a boxing match that is very dangerous as every single boxer is blindfolded to enhance the entertainment for the drunken white men watching. The most prominent character of the story, the narrator, is nameless this serves as a way for the reader to sink into the character even more than usual as there is no specific person that he is called. Then you should watch The Ninth Configuration. When do we realize something is wrong? When it is too late. Scenes of Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) acting take precedence over the sad life of Father Karras, who has to deal with the death of his mother and his increasing lack of faith. What’s striking is that how long the movie takes to get there. Inspired by William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, which itself was inspired by the 1949 exorcism of Roland Doe (“The Pope’s Exorcist” Malachi Martin claimed that he was the inspiration, a point that Blatty denied) the legends around this film - it was a cursed set, it’s filled with subliminal messages - supersede a very simple fact: this movie is frightening as hell, even 40 plus years later.ĭo I even need to tell you the story of how Pazuzu finds its way into an Ouija board and into the soul of the daughter of an actress? Probably not. The much remembered projectile vomiting doesn’t occur until much later, by which time those who have come merely for cheap shocks have long since tuned out. What do you write about a movie that pretty much created modern horror? Sure, you can point to Night of the Living Dead and even Carnival of Souls as starting points, but from a mainstream blockbuster perspective, this is where the rules of modern supernatural horror begin. One of William Friedkin’s master strokes was knowing that viewers would already be worked up into a state before enterting the theatre, because the novel was so controversial and no one knew how they would film it without getting an X-rating, so he played off the expectation, toying with the audience for the first half-hour with nothing but an enigmatic prologue in Iraq and scratching noises in the attic. That’s not what the film is about, despite its reputation. Well, almost no film can overcome a willful desire not to be entertained.Īs far as boring, well, yeah, if you go in expecting special effects and violence from scene one, then you will be bored. Whereas once people went to the film in anticipation of being scared, now they go in as if challenged, and put up resistance to the film. ![]() I think what has happened is that the audience attitude has changed. I saw the film again a few years agot at a midnight screenining in Westood, California, and I have to disagree with those today who insist that it is no longer scary or that it is camp. At any rate, I doubt this happened very often (I saw the film three or four times during its intial release and never observed such an incident) probably the media exaggerated a very few incidents. If people had been waiting out in the sun, without eating anything, they might even be light-headed to begin with, hence the potential fainting. I would be willing to bet that the advance word-of-mouth, apprehension over the subject matter, the notoriety of the book, and the long time waiting…waiting…waiting to get inside and finally see the movie–all these contributed to a mindset conducive to being scared witless. The film played in only 60 theatres for several months if people wanted to go, they had to drive downtown and stand in line for hours. Remember, THE EXORCIST was released in the days before wide national releases opened films on 2000 screens the first weekend. Seems he had tried to identify the subliminals in the days before home videotape, laserdisc, and DVD needless to say, without frame-by-frame analysis, he ended up way off the mark.īy the way, I doubt the subliminals had much to do with the stories of people fainting in theatres. There’s a big difference.Įven if Karras had committed a mortal sin (suicide or any other), he would not have been damned at the end of the film, as he makes a final (albeit silent) confession before dying.Īs for subliminal messages, Video Watchdog magazine did a good article on this (sorry, can’t remember the issue). He’s also grappling with being the public face of the very system that’s caused him fear in the past. Take Officer Malcolm Whitelaw of the Kansas City Police Department, who was at the vanguard of his department’s video strategy. Still, some of the officers who make the videos are reckoning with their involvement in them. There has been a boom in these shows and channels over the past 19 months, after both Cops and Live PD - criticized for years for glorifying police work and perpetuating racial stereotypes - were canceled amid the summer 2020 protests. A new form of “copaganda,” as activists refer to it. But these are coming from the departments themselves, with police employees editing and uploading the clips right to YouTube. The videos continue the tradition, popularized by shows like Cops and Live PD, of glorifying police work via highly edited, suspenseful, “documentary”-style entertainment. The Los Angeles Police Department regularly posts bodycam and security footage, sometimes cutting it together with a moving score, like this video of an officer providing first aid to a man injured during riots after an LA Lakers championship game. The New York Police Department has posted over 800 videos to its channel, including web series called Beyond the Badge and Neighborhood Policing. ![]() Now, police departments across the nation are producing slick videos, pushing a “good cop” image after years of outrage over shootings, many captured on video and published to social media, and the resulting protests demanding accountability. Keep fighting, keep trying, and keep pushing to get the recognition you deserve. The best advice Sandra can give to ladies trying to get into tattooing is to not get discouraged. Unsurprisingly for Boston, sports-themed tattoos are also really popular.Īs tattooing becomes more popular and more mainstream, hopefully we will continue to see more ladies breaking their way into the industry. So, what requests are popular these days? Lots of stuff from Pinterest, like an infinity knot with the words strength and love, and feathers or dandelions that dissolve into birds. For her, the most important thing is to do it right and to have you be happy when you leave. If you do come as a walk-in, she will want to know more about that decision. A tattoo doesn't have to be a literal interpretation so take the opportunity to work with your artist to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art that is all yours (this is one of things I love about tattoos and working with Sandra). A tattoo artist is ultimately an artist, and Sandra really loves the creative process. To make something on paper into the best tattoo design, there will have to be some changes. ![]() So, yup, you don't have to show up with the exact picture of what you want, in fact, it's actually better if you don't. Her favorite way to work with people is to do a consultation so she can discuss subject matter, size, and placement. Sandra does tattoo full-time, but takes a day away from the shop each week for drawing. Since Smalerie and I had Sandra as a captive audience and vice versa, we asked her a little bit about a day-in-the life for her. I am willing to bet many of you have tattoos or are thinking about them. ![]() While tattooing has much less of a stigma now ("It's not just for sailors and whores anymore"), a neck tattoo can be seen as a "job stopper." She said she really takes pause in doing things like neck tattoos on younger people. I had asked if there was any work she would ever refuse to do. Bodies curve and change, so keeping that is mind is important. She feels that (and I have benefited from this greatly in the work she has done for me) you should design a tattoo to not just look good on the skin, but that body placement matters and working with your particular shape is important. As she developed her style, she found she drifted towards nature-based work with less realism she wants her work to feel like a tattoo, rather than a photograph tattooed on. When Sandra first started tattooing, she tried everything. According to Sandra, it's good to work on yourself when you are learning so you get direct feedback on the experience. So Sandra looked to many different places and areas to learn, including DC and New Hampshire. This was made even tougher by the stigma that while women could be artists, they can't tattoo. There was no apprentice program that she could take advantage of, so to learn, she had to do a lot of work to persuade someone to teach her. But getting others to support that was not easy. Sandra realized in high school that she had a talent for art, and when she came across tattooing in her 20's, a light bulb went off for her, and she knew that it was something for her. Not a small feat considering tattooing was illegal in MA until 2000. While there is not a ton of data that I could find on the ratio of male to female tattoo artists, today that number is small, so back in 1990 when Sandra was looking to learn, it was even smaller. Sandra Burbul is currently based at Kaleidoscope Tattoo in Cambridge MA, and she has been tattooing professionally for 20 years. I combined getting a tattoo reworked with learning more about my artist, the industry, and even some best practices around getting a tattoo. This past December, I decided to visit her again to get an old piece reworked, and this time I was prepared, with Smalerie in tow to take notes. Last year I met one of them and while she did a lovely piece for me, she was cool enough to tell me a little about her experience. However there are ladies out there, working hard, pushing their way in, and doing amazing work. On my less than 2 mile walk to work, I pass four! So while tattoos have become fairly mainstream, the make-up of those who do the work still skews heavily male. Getting tattoos in Massachusetts (where the Ladies are based) was illegal until 2000, and since then shops have popped up fast and furious. One area that might not be at the forefront of your mind is the tattoo industry. When you think of industries where ladies are underrepresented, the ones that spring to mind are likely the tech industry, or the comics industry, airline pilots, STEM, construction.anyway. ![]() ![]() Business pricing scales based on how many people are on your team.
